Improved again, still our favorite bird identification software!

See how easy it is to use.

See:   Field Guide Page    Pick One Quiz    ID Wizard Sound Tab      List Manager   Our Birds Texas My Region Upgrade info

Here's why we've always liked this software:

  • You can look at a bird's picture and play it's songs (with or without the spectogram)

  • Click on one tab to see similar species or other members of the same family

  • Easily compare two birds side by side, again looking at pictures or listening to them

  • See range maps, distributions maps

  • Identification tips are great, includes pneumonics ('who cooks for you, who cooks for you all?')

  • There is an identification wizard, you select characteristics then see a photo gallery of potential birds

  • You can incorporate it into your Screen Saver, with or without the bird songs

  • You can filter lists so you can study birds from your nearby state park, or look at birds from areas you'll be visiting

  • Great for hooking up to incorporate into a projected  presentation or print pictures.

  • Loads into your hard drive for easier, quicker access

  • Thayerbirding.com website offers regular updates (we recommend checking for updates every 4-6 months).

  • The thick, yellow book with the icons for nests, habitat, food, eggs, general information and birding essays is scanned onto the disc

  • And call me a nerd, but I'm a big Petey the Parrot fan, his jokes, his goofy expressions, and the fact that I can get him to say anything I want him to!!!!

All of this BEFORE the following improvements to 3.5:

  •   The Birder's Handbook will now be included in all State/Province/Family CDs (a $24.00 value)

  •  Truly interactive, letting users input photos, text and links directly to the field guide page.

  •   Songs and photos can easily be loaded onto your MP3 player to play anywhere

  •  New Pick One quiz lets you click on one of four photos to select the answer

  •  Entirely new look to the Main Screen makes the program MUCH easier to use

  •  ID Wizard now lets you identify a bird by its sound

  •  Registration is optional, rather than required within 30 days

  •  Birds have been updated to match the 2006 American Ornithologists' Union list.

  •  New photos and songs have been added

  • Zoomed photos fill the screen -- and you can scroll through all zoomed photos for each bird

  • All birds from the same family can now be seen at once -- making comparisons easier

  • Registration not required

  • Can be loaded into multiple computers, license says can be used on only one computer at a time

  • Schools, nature centers etc. can purchase a multiple use license

And, know,  here's how the publisher describes ver. 3.9 this software:

1. Version 3.9 is Vista compatible. It will also run on Windows XP and Windows 2000.

2. Downloads to an iPod now include songs AND photos.

3. 20 to 100 species have been added to each state and province CD.

4. Users can easily open multiple eField Guide tabs to see more than one species at a time. (Notice the tabs for four species at the top of the eField Guide in this link).

5. Users can easily jump to the next species or the previous species -- as well as the first or last species on the list. (see the Species Selection section in this link).

6. State and province checklists have been updated. The ID Wizard will show more "common" birds for each location.

7. The taxonomic list has been updated to match the American Ornithologists' Union (AOU) 47th supplement. The Blue Grouse has been split into Dusky Grouse and Sooty Grouse.

8. The buttons and links in the program have been updated so that they all now behave like a typical Windows installation. The mouse scroll wheel now behaves as expected in all parts of the program.

9. Minor changes have been made throughout the program to make it easier and more intuitive to use. The User's Manual has also been revised.

10. It is now much easier to see which filter you have turned on.

11. The underlying code has been rewritten in .NET rather than VB6. (That's tech talk for "New and Improved")

This is how they described the program the VISTA compatible version 3.9 was built on:

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Thayer Birding Software have joined forces to create the ultimate CD for birders. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Guide to Birds of North America v3.5 features all 926 birds ever seen in the U.S. or Canada (excluding Hawaii).

This incredible CD includes 2,788 color photos and songs for 707 species. 90 video clips are also included. This CD can help you identify unfamiliar birds. Simply select the color, size, habitat, location or sound of your bird and the program will show you everything that matches your description!

Also included are 700 quizzes arranged into "Birding Hot Spots", "Christmas Bird Counts", Favorite Birds" and more. Set the level at Easy or crank it all the way up to Difficult. Select Multiple Choice, Fill-in-the-blank, Flash Card or "Pick One" quizzes. This CD also includes a listing and recordkeeping program to help you remember the birds you have seen.

With version 3.5, you can also share Custom Lists with your friends, download songs to an iPod for your own personal use and add your own comments and photos for each bird. New colorful icons make it very easy to use the CD.

System Requirements: Windows 2000, Me or XP; Pentium 4 processor or equivalent; 128 MB RAM; CD-ROM drive; 50 MB on hard drive; plus hardware and software required to support multimedia applications. Some features of this CD-ROM require an Internet connection.
