Betty Dooley Awbrey and Claude Dooley with the Texas Historical Commission
This is a great book for cruising Texas' U.S. and State Highways, especially if not everyone in the car (especially the driver!) is a history buff, willing to poke along and stop at the historical markers. Why Stop's text is exactly what is on the markers, with no embellishment. (If you like a more lyrical tale, we recommend Roadside History of Texas.) WIth over 12,000 markers to choose from, the authors looked for historical events; famous and infamous Texans and non-Texans; origins of towns; churches and organizations; battles, skirmishes and gunfights; settlers, pioneers, Indians and outlaws and even some natural history! We do recommend that you keep a road map with this book, though, as the markers are arranged alphabetically by their nearest town. The description does include the county, highway directions and the year the marker was installed. This new (fifth) edition added more than 170 new markers, but because the book size is limited, others were deleted.
Paperback, 565 pages, 9.0 x 6.1 x 1.2 inches, index with towns, counties, key persons and events responsible for the markers; 4 b&w photos illustrate different styles of markers. October 30, 2005.
