"Texas Parks and Wildlife. Birders and other wildlife watchers living in or traveling to Austin and San Antonio, or driving from Austin to Abilene or Laredo to San Antonio will want to carry the Heart of Texas Wildlife Trail – East map. The 14 loops, with each loop designed for a weekend adventure, encompass 124 sites, with about 100 of them within about an hour’s drive from either Austin or San Antonio. This is one of two maps for the Heart of Texas, and one of six (soon to be eight) birding/wildlife trail maps produced by Texas Parks and Wildlife. They include more private lands than the Coastal Birding Trail maps (and hence require more pre-planning before visiting) and include more information on mammals, butterflies, dragonflies and other watchable wildlife. Each site on the Trail is marked with a unique sign and site number designed to coincide with the site description on the map. The Trail maps have information about the birds and habitats likely to be found at each site, the best season to visit, and contacts for obtaining food and lodging available in the vicinity. The icons are coded to indicate if there is an entry fee or camping sites available.
