This continues to be an economical North American bird guide. Color illustrations of the birds presented in loose taxonomic order, range map is with the text and paintings but does not include state outlines, great comparison plates (i.e. streak breast sparrows, fall warblers etc) and the only guide to include sonagrams to depict bird songs. Good birding introduction, very portable for use in the field. This was the one my ornithology professor recommended to us, but that was when there were two choices, this and Peterson (and Peterson at that time separated text, illustrations and range). This is the book Kenn Kaufman read every night when he was a kid, an inspiration for anyone beginning to show an interest in birds.
