Butterflies Through Binoculars, The East

Dr. Jeffrey Glassberg

This is the first field guide for butterflies that doesn’t rely on catching them and having butterflies in hand to identify them. Glassberg’s Butterflies Through Binoculars color photographs show the butterflies perched with their wings closed and open, so you can see both sides (or the side you are most likely to see). The range maps are colored coded to the number of broods each species has during the year. If it is coded for one brood (number of times pupas will hatch in the summer, one brood means the offspring over winter in the pupa stage), there is a much shorter time period you are likely to see that species than one that has three broods. Glassberg defines east as a line running from just east of Houston to the North Dakota/Canadian border. Several of the butterflies range west of that line, and their range is incorporated. The books introduction contains valuable information to get people started ‘butterflying.” It contains a section on butterfly photography, including why people use photos to record their sightings, and how to take good pictures. Unlike Butterflies through Binoculars West, this first version does not have the butterflies' information with the pictures of the butterflies.
