This western version, combined with Butterflies through Binoculars, the East provides all the common (and not so common) butterflies found in the U.S (this guide includes Hawaii!) and southern Canada. There are over 1,000 photographs of living butterflies in their habitat, open and closed wing when appropriate, presented in the traditional field guide format. There is information provided on field marks, how to identify and locate butterflies, range maps, flight times, advice on food plants, gardening, photography and choosing binoculars. Serious butterfly enthusiasts will appreciate the supplemental text section, with mini-essays on a variety of topics. North Dakota and Texas mark the eastern extent of the range maps, eastern Texas (the Pineywoods) is outside the territory covered in this edition.
